What’s your best live music moment?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

That was the question Trokia + the BBC Electric Proms asked people during the festival last October. Selected SMS / Web submitted answers were projected onto a huge wall at the festival’s headline venue the Roundhouse, Camden.

Several festivals I’ve been to over the years have displayed sms messages from the crowd on screens that often sit next to stage. It does the job but lacks any integration with the event itself, which is why the wall at the electric proms worked so well. The typography and positioning of the text itself worked really well in the space and it provided good material for people to read while they were waiting for friends or queuing at the bar.’

Introducing Koichiro Tsujikawa

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Last night I followed up my rediscovery of Cornelius with some world wide web digging which led me to director Koichiro Tsujikawa, long-term collaborator of said music artist.

As you will see his portfolio displays a fine body of work ranging commercials, music videos, short film and tv. The music video’s he has produced compliment Cornelius’s sound perfectly, below is the excellent video he produced for ‘Fit Song’ from the album ‘Sensuous’. Amazing!

If you like what you see and hear read a brief interview with him that touches on his background and process here, and then view more video’s.

3 things I’ve liked this week

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

There is no gold, sliver and bronze to be awarded here - all three are absolute winners…

1. Stevie Gee + Big Active
I’ve finally tracked down the creators of the awesome artwork for the latest Athlete album.

2. Vampire Weekend
Punk / New Wave / Classical sounding stuff from New York based band that I have been very lucky to see play a couple of times recetnly.

3. ‘Put it Back’ Anthony Burrill exhibition at Concrete Hermit
I’m off to take a look later today - this has motivated me to finally get framed the rather confident AB print I brought earlier this year.

Free music on the Internet Archive

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

My new favourite site at the moment is over at archive.org. The Live Music Archive is a project to allow access to free live recordings. I’ve stubled upon a few great gigs here plus a few currently touring groups.. (Animal Collective, Spoon, Calexico etc…) Here’s a big long page of live recordings on the archive.

But there is more to the archive than live music. There are all sorts of audio freebies at the Audio Archive. How about a free Mount Eerie album!!

Well done internet!

Let me know if you find anything worth checking out.

The Whitest Boy Alive

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

One of the bands I found aurally pleasing at Roskilde this year was The Whitest Boy Alive, they are fronted by Erlend Øye of Kings of Convenience fame. Here is the promo for their ‘Golden Cage’ track, illustrated by Geoff Mcfetridge. The promo is kind of dull looking with nice drawings, it sounds good though :)

I won the Lottery on Saturday

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Obviously not the all singing all dancing millionaire version otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here writing this now, but I did win the iTunes Festival Lottery.

‘This July a completely new festival is coming to town. Introducing the first ever iTunes Festival — a radical new concept that brings together world-class bands, intimate live performances and the best in digital technology. Spread over 31 consecutive nights, more than 60 of the world’s hottest acts will perform at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in the heart of London.

The mechanic in which tickets were distributed was simply a lottery, you registered on the ICA website for a ticket draw (there were 2) and from this you were in with a chance to win one of the 20 pairs available for each night. There are competitions with media partners still on for you to win tickets.

For me Saturday night didn’t feel like winning the jackpot, it was more like getting three numbers up as the performing artists were the very ‘nice’, non offensive, ‘not my cup of tea’ Paolo Nutini supported by The Ghosts, despite this we still had a great time though. To help aid further positive word of mouth for the festival each pass on the night had a promo code on which enables you to redeem ‘10 free songs’ from the iTunes Store, now thats what I call a healthy Saturday night take away!

Reason 4

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Ok, a geeky one here… A couple of months back I noticed a job going for a graphic designer for Propellerhead’s Reason software.

“Tasks will include interface design of devices, interface widgets, icons and other graphical elements for our software applications as well as graphical elements for the web.”

I started thinking.. what a mental job!! Apart from being one of the most extensive and painstakingly accurate pieces of metaphorically designed software ever, it is also one of the greatest audio experiences. Designing it well is a real interface design challenge.

Well months have past, someone got the job, and a new version is on the horizon. Version 4 Looks like the designers have once again had their work cut out, cramming those tiny buttons in. I don’t think they’re recreating any more real devices now, all that’s left is to invent new ones.

Can’t wait to get my mits on this!
