I won the Lottery on Saturday

Monday, July 16th, 2007

Obviously not the all singing all dancing millionaire version otherwise I probably wouldn’t be here writing this now, but I did win the iTunes Festival Lottery.

‘This July a completely new festival is coming to town. Introducing the first ever iTunes Festival — a radical new concept that brings together world-class bands, intimate live performances and the best in digital technology. Spread over 31 consecutive nights, more than 60 of the world’s hottest acts will perform at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in the heart of London.

The mechanic in which tickets were distributed was simply a lottery, you registered on the ICA website for a ticket draw (there were 2) and from this you were in with a chance to win one of the 20 pairs available for each night. There are competitions with media partners still on for you to win tickets.

For me Saturday night didn’t feel like winning the jackpot, it was more like getting three numbers up as the performing artists were the very ‘nice’, non offensive, ‘not my cup of tea’ Paolo Nutini supported by The Ghosts, despite this we still had a great time though. To help aid further positive word of mouth for the festival each pass on the night had a promo code on which enables you to redeem ‘10 free songs’ from the iTunes Store, now thats what I call a healthy Saturday night take away!

Cai Guo-Qiang

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

With work dating back to 1988 Cai Guo-Qiang’s website has a great collection of his art online. It’s great to look at a retrospective collection by an artist who consistently carries a wide variety of themes throughout his career. Animals, shadows, floating and explosions are to name a few.

Cai is currently a core member of the creative team and the director of visual and special effects of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. He is also preparing for his large-scale retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York with subsequent international venues.

Social Writing

penguin logo.jpg

as im getting used the subtleties and nuances of book collaborations and vowing not to repeat the process again for a very long time.
I thought Id pause and have a look round and see how others are conducting book collaborations in other areas such as writing a novel. It turns out a couple of months ago. Penguin, the publisher in conjunction with De Montfort university and their creative writing course, started a collaborative wiki-based creative writing exercise called A million penguins. According to them it was ‘with the best spirit of scientific endeavour’ and the result so far is 1030 pages of content. well, its pretty disjointed narrative if you ask me- even if you started reading from the organised section by section listing.. but its content nonetheless and a fantastic experiment helped in part that its backed by such a big publisher.

I recently came across this too in the social writing / crowdsourcing sphere:
oort-cloud.org

“…authors create and distribute their work, and readers, individually and collectively, including fans as well as editors and peers, review, comment, rank, and tag, everything.”

Interesting times. As for me, my book writing days are gladly nearly over.
