From Pokers with Love

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Here are three good things that have been sent round at Poke this week…

1. See the drastic change in the pay gap between the average CEO and the average worker since 1970 with the swell CEO payscale slider.

2. More infographics, this time from Flip Flop Flying - Facial Hair of US, UK and UN leaders.

3. ‘Climate Change’ animation from Airside+ Mother.

Introducing Gina

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

She’s on her way, and looking fine…

… Before she’s ready for any kind of release she needs a bit more work. Meanwhile, though, I’m looking for beta testers in case people have some projects that might work as a test run. Drop me a line at sparky@ultrasparky.org if you’re interested.

Global Cities, Tate Modern

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Photo from Wanderer and Wonderer

Global Cities looks at the changing faces of ten dynamic international cities: Cairo, Istanbul, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Mumbai, São Paulo, Shanghai and Tokyo.

Exploring each city through five thematic lenses – speed, size, density, diversity and form – the exhibition draws on data originally assembled for the 10th International Architecture Exhibition at the 2006 Venice Biennale. This unique show presents existing films, videos and photographs by more than 20 artists and architects to offer subjective and intimate interpretations of urban conditions in all ten cities.

I went on Saturday - the combination of larger than life human geography and the arts was hugely absorbing. You can’t help but be overwhelmed by the sheer volume of stuff, and a second trip could well be on the cards. It’s on until August 27th.

Three things I liked:

Yang zhenzhong’s video installation ‘Let’s Puff’

Kendell Geers photographic study of Johannesburg’s secure ‘Suburbia’ (navigate to suburbia via images)

Dryden Goodwin’s short film ‘Reveal’

Free music on the Internet Archive

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

My new favourite site at the moment is over at archive.org. The Live Music Archive is a project to allow access to free live recordings. I’ve stubled upon a few great gigs here plus a few currently touring groups.. (Animal Collective, Spoon, Calexico etc…) Here’s a big long page of live recordings on the archive.

But there is more to the archive than live music. There are all sorts of audio freebies at the Audio Archive. How about a free Mount Eerie album!!

Well done internet!

Let me know if you find anything worth checking out.

Carslberg dont do litter

Sunday, July 22nd, 2007

carlsberg_litter_420.jpg

£5000 in £10 and £20 notes were individually dropped around the streets of London with a removable sticker that read, Carlsberg don’t do litter. But if they did it would probably be the best litter in the world’.

The Whitest Boy Alive

Thursday, July 19th, 2007

One of the bands I found aurally pleasing at Roskilde this year was The Whitest Boy Alive, they are fronted by Erlend Øye of Kings of Convenience fame. Here is the promo for their ‘Golden Cage’ track, illustrated by Geoff Mcfetridge. The promo is kind of dull looking with nice drawings, it sounds good though :)
