W+K Rules
This is not a post about me positioning Wieden + Kennedy as the No.1 Advertising agency in the world, afterall what do I know about advertising?
This is a post when I tell you I went to my first D&AD presidents lecture on Monday night. ‘Dial up the Crazy’ saw the founding partners of W+K, David Kennedy and Dan Wieden interviewed by an old colleague. The interview led us through the W+K story, 25 years in the making. If you’re not familiar with their work, they have been creating advertising for the likes of Nike, Honda and more recently Coke and The Guardian. My favorite piece they presented to us was a spot for Nike running from 1988, featuring ‘Walt Stack’.
So for the ‘rules’, a piece of W+K history presented on the night, with this story attached to them…
‘According to Mr. David Kennedy, These rules were found in a desk drawer a long time ago. A six year old kid had come into the office one day with his parents and wrote these out to keep himself occupied while Mom and Dad worked. David found these and adopted them. “This was highly evolved way of thinking and we could learn from it.”
I think its healthy for everyone to read the ‘rules’ once in a while.
I need to work on No.4 most

I’ve been to two or three now, it’s good to hear how other creatives perceive the industry where in. I do like to see the history of companies how they started and suddenly flurished with hard work etc….
Yet because of the position the speakers are in now (higher up in the echelons of their careers) they are unaware on how things have / are changing or how speakers sometimes seem distant from things, they do like their buzz words. Take a long breath and you’ll have missed something, but the number of times I’ve heard the above sentiment - I do kind of feel that it sometimes comes accross as artifical and contrived.
But with all that said, they’re good points and number 4 is hard to follow sometimes even for the average joe!
(cynical day!)
