US+A parts 3&4

Tuesday, May 29th, 2007

This weekend I finished sorting out my holiday pictures, to see the pictures from our roadtrip and 48 hours in San Francisco have a look here. One of the standout places we visited in San Francisco was the de Young museum, with huge views of the city from the observation tower it’s well worth a visit. With a similar exterior aesthetic and angular construct to the Jewish museum in Berlin at first I thought it must have been designed by the same Architects, but after a quick wikipedia blast I now know I was completely wrong.

W+K Rules

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

This is not a post about me positioning Wieden + Kennedy as the No.1 Advertising agency in the world, afterall what do I know about advertising?

This is a post when I tell you I went to my first D&AD presidents lecture on Monday night. ‘Dial up the Crazy’ saw the founding partners of W+K, David Kennedy and Dan Wieden interviewed by an old colleague. The interview led us through the W+K story, 25 years in the making. If you’re not familiar with their work, they have been creating advertising for the likes of Nike, Honda and more recently Coke and The Guardian. My favorite piece they presented to us was a spot for Nike running from 1988, featuring ‘Walt Stack’.

So for the ‘rules’, a piece of W+K history presented on the night, with this story attached to them…

‘According to Mr. David Kennedy, These rules were found in a desk drawer a long time ago. A six year old kid had come into the office one day with his parents and wrote these out to keep himself occupied while Mom and Dad worked. David found these and adopted them. “This was highly evolved way of thinking and we could learn from it.”

I think its healthy for everyone to read the ‘rules’ once in a while.

I need to work on No.4 most :)

Primavera Sound 07

Thursday, May 17th, 2007

I’m afraid to say it, but Dom made me jealous after his excursion to the usa to coachella.

I orignally wanted to go to ATP vs the Fans this weekend, but my buddies couldn’t get time off and to short notice.

I do fancy going to a gig like this, so I’m trying to line up going to Primavera Sound, but as usual nobodies available, so if you know anybody whos going or wants to go, give us a shout and see if we can arrange something…

The Pianist

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

I finally got round to watching Roman Polanski’s film The Pianist on the weekend. For those who haven’t seen it yet, It’s a powerful account of the ethnic cleansing the Nazi’s carried out on the Jewish population in Warsaw, Poland during WW2. As to be expected the film documents the harrowing extermenation of the enforced jewish ghetto’s, but one man’s (talented jewish musican) determination to survive under the terryifying conditions played by Adrien Brody (who I think looks like a cartoon character by the way) rewards the viewer massively. On a lighter note Paul Bradley aka. Nigel Bates from Eastenders fame, plays an underground jewish newspaper publisher - nice work Nige.

It feels slightly uncomfortable to describe the film as brilliant, but it is - everyone should see this.
